UNICON- Unions and Businesses United in Construction- and Rochester Careers in Construction Incorporated (RCCI) is proud to announce the release of the 2010 Construction Education Resource Directory.
The newest version of the Directory serves as an educational tool for students, teachers, and guidance counselors to connect them to the many career resources available in the construction industry.
Resource Guide sections include: industry job descriptions; including New York State employment statistics, mean average wages and salaries, as well as information on educational institutions and colleges that offer degree programs in the construction trades. Statistics were provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor.
“I think people will be surprised by the information that they will see in this publication, “said Ken Warner, Executive Director of UNICON and Chair of RCCI. “The construction industry is sometimes very misunderstood. These are not just the hammer and nails jobs we think of when we think construction. These are highly technical, skilled careers that can offer students a rewarding future.”
The original concept for the Resource Directory came in 2002 when the RCCI Board of Directors discovered a need for a publication that outlined construction careers that was suitable for educators and students alike. With programs and events like the Construction Career Day held every October at the Monroe County Fleet Center, RCCI’S main mission is to improve the image of the construction industry among high school age students as a viable career choice. As the RCCI Construction Career Days evolved, the Board felt they needed some additional information for adults that influenced career choices among high school age students looking for the next step upon graduation. In 2002, the first edition of the Resource Guide fulfilled this need.
“A lot has happened in the industry since 2002,” said Ken Warner. “The 2010 Resource Guide has been updated to reflect the times. This guide offers a glimpse into the wide variety of career choices that are now available. We hope students and educators use this guide to prepare the next generation of craftsworkers for the challenging and exciting futures in the construction trades.”
The new user-friendly version is now available online at the UNICON website www.uniconrochester.com, and features clickable links to construction industry contacts, apprentice program websites and colleges.
Funding for the publication of the 2010 Education Resource Directory was provided by UNICON, CIAR, Laborers Local #435, Manning, Squires and Hennig Inc., and Crane Hogan Structural Systems.
