For over a decade now, UNICON – Unions and Businesses United in Construction – has been a voice for strong economic development in the Western New York Region. What started as just an idea – signatory contractors and their union partners working together for the common good – has blossomed into a reality that has become the envy of other areas throughout the state.
In the beginning, three Unions (Laborers Local 435, Bricklayers Local 3 and Carpenters Local 85) and their business counterparts comprised the board. But as time passed, interest and membership grew. Today, the Operating Engineers Local 832 and Electrical Workers Local 86 are full partners and Associate members include Consulting Engineers, The Rochester Building and Construction Trades Council, Ironworkers Local 33, Sheet Metal Workers Local 46 and more.
The mission is clear – work toward strong economic development for the future of the region. But we also work to help prepare for that future by emphasizing training for the craftsworkers of tomorrow. The educational component of UNICON is a strong one, partnering with Apprentice Programs from various trades, Schools, Colleges and municipalities.
We believe in our communities. It’s where we work and live. By partnering together and forming strong relationships and cooperating with other likeminded organizations, we’re helping make our region all it can and should be.
